Plans to makeover Eastern Leisure Centre look set to get the green light this week. The centre in Llanrumney is expected to close in September for a major £6.5m redevelopment with work starting in October to be completed by 2016. The final plans will be discussed by Cardiff Council’s cabinet members tomorrow and if agreed, a procurement process will start to select a contractor.

The new features will include an open reception area, a licensed cafe or juice bar overlooking the swimming pool, improved changing rooms, gym and soft play facilities, a new dance studio and spin room, and improvements to the pool. The council recently announced it would be looking at other delivery models for its leisure services and said Eastern Leisure Centre will be included in this.

Councillor Peter Bradbury, cabinet member for Community Development, Co-operatives and Social Enterprise, said: “The modernisation of Eastern Leisure Centre has enjoyed strong support from both the community and elected Councillors so this multi-million-pound investment will be welcome news.”
