An extra 150 jobs could be created as the result of a major leisure development which is being built alongside Yate Shopping Centre. Marks and Spencer Simply Food, Sports Direct and Costa Coffee are all opening stores shortly in the new East Walk development. But in addition, the owners of the centre say that a £12 million investment in a new cinema, restaurants and other shops is expected to create at least another 150 full and part-time jobs within the next 12 to 18 months.

The owner of the centre, Dominion Corporate Trustees (DCT), has announced that it is carrying out a public consultation on its plans in a bid to get views from local people on its plans. The scheme will include a brand new six-screen cinema, six restaurants and food outlets along with three new stores. The development will also include extra car parking spaces for the development.

The owners said the total investment in the project would come to more than £12 million and it would create an extra 150 jobs as well as 100 jobs during the construction over the next 12 months. Mark Hull, DCT’s group property controller, said: "Our aim is to create a nightlife venue for Yate that will rival other nearby centres and save people having to drive out of the town for their entertainment. We already have operators interested in taking the majority of the space in the development.

"This latest project will bring our total spend in Yate to more than £40m, in the last three years and we are committed to ensuring that Yate Shopping Centre is a 21st century facility that serves the locality and plays a major role in keeping people in the town."
