BAM Construction has been appointed to create a new UK headquarters building for Imperial Tobacco in Bristol. The £7m contract will see BAM refurbish and refit an office block to house around 200 Imperial Tobacco employees in south Bristol at the company’s new UK headquarters. Work is expected to start this month and finish in July 2014. The designer is AWW Architects.

The two-storey building is on the same site as the old cigar factory on Winterstoke Road in Ashton. This was demolished in August 2011 to make way for Imperial Tobacco’s new global head office, also built by BAM and completed earlier this year. BAM is aiming for a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating, with sustainability measures including photovoltaic cells, biomass boilers and rainwater harvesting.

BAM Director Nick Goff said: “We’re delighted Imperial Tobacco has chosen to work with BAM again on this important building for its UK staff. We look forward to using our skills and experience to ensure the scheme benefits the local community and environment as much as it does the staff of Imperial Tobacco.”

Last year BAM became the first construction company in the south west to achieve National Skills Academy for Construction status. It’s creating more than 100 work experience placements in the region. The company has built scores of signature projects in the city and has more than 20 live projects at the moment, including three education schemes in Bristol itself.
