New Ebbw Vale Hospice Plans Unveiled
A permanent base for palliative care in Blaenau Gwent has moved a step closer with the unveiling of the master plan for the £2m Hospice of the Valleys in Ebbw Vale and after councillors at Blaenau Gwent Council agreed the planning conditions. In July, planners gave permission for a new Hospice of the Valleys day centre at The Works site in Ebbw Vale – despite objections from their own officers – but with planning conditions. The hospice has already had outline planning permission for the site approved, but the committee has now approved the conditions attached to reserved matters.
The Hospice will be built on a suitable plot within the reclaimed former Steelworks Site at Ebbw Vale. The master plan has been developed by the Centre for Engineering Research and Environmental Applications (CEREA) at the University of Glamorgan after being appointed by the Hospice of the Valleys as the lead design and project management consultant for the development.
The CEREA design and project management team headed by Professor Demetrios Djialli, worked in collaboration with the Chief Executive of the Hospice, the Trustees and Blaenau Gwent’s Project Office to provide a design that addressed both the client’s brief, and worked within the design parameters of this unique site. The terms of design and its construction and operation, state that the building is to be a low energy, low carbon building and will incorporate renewable energy systems, rainwater harvesting and other sustainable features that will enable it to attain an Excellent BREEAM (Building Research Environmental Assessment Method) rating. The proposed building’s exterior makes use of a selection of sustainable approved materials including heritage brickwork, smooth coloured render and sustainably sourced timber cladding together with feature glazing to provide a façade which conveys modernity whilst maintaining a connection with the site’s historical past.
