Cardiff City councillors have given the green light to proposals for a new Morrisons supermarket to be built on Newport Road, bringing an estimated 300 jobs to the east of the city. The council’s planning committee today approved plans for a 6,200 square metre store on the site of a former dairy and Amante Car showroom on Newport Road.
The supermarket will include a 348 space car park cars and a petrol station, and is expected to have an annual turnout over £35.32 million. The site of the former dairy on Newport Road has been derelict for the last three years.
The store, which is expected to open in 2017, will offer building services work plus create 300 part and full time jobs, up to three quarters of which would go to unemployed people.
Morrisons’ development executive Mark Thompson said: “We are very excited about the development proposal for a new Morrisons store on Newport Road, Cardiff. Not only will the foodstore create hundreds of new local jobs, it will be a design first for Wales, as we have proposed a bespoke ‘stilted’ design concept.
“Our plans will help to regenerate this gateway location by bringing this derelict site back into reproductive economic use. With the nearest Morrisons store over five miles away, local residents will now have improved choice and competition for their weekly shop.”
